There are very few subjects in technology and science that cause as much of a stir as artificial intelligence. There is a belief that artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize nearly all aspects of our lives.
On the other side of that coin, there are myths that exist in part due to those looking to make a quick buck on things that cannot yet be met. There are a few common myths about AI that need to be explained so that people have a better understanding of what AI isn’t.
AI Is Not Here to Replace All Jobs
This is perhaps the most common misconception. The narrative that some have been selling for years is that AI will come along and rob humanity of jobs. But this is simply not the case.
Sure, there will be positions that can be automated due to artificial intelligence. But there are plenty of positions that will be created in fields that are just beginning to grow. We are still in the early stages of artificial intelligence and there will be just as many jobs likely to be created as there will be taken away.
Super-Intelligent Computers Will Be Better Than Humans
There are two different kinds of AI — specialized and generalized. The former is one that focuses on performing a specific job or working in a specific field and becoming increasingly better at it. There are plenty of medical and legal applications in this instance.
There is also generalized. This is where machines are capable of applying themselves to a number of different tasks. Even though these machines are improving at learning different functions, it is unlikely that we will deal with super-human-level artificial intelligence.
There are seemingly as many misconceptions out there about artificial intelligence as there are potential realities and it is important to make a distinction between the two. There is so much growth to be had with artificial intelligence that it would be foolish to let misconceptions derail that progress. Pairing with artificial intelligence is the wave of the future and we continue to learn how humanity can work side by side with this developing technology.
