5 Characteristics of a Good Mentor

Mentors are an important part of starting in a new career field. A good mentor can show you the ins and outs of the field and answer any questions that you have. However, some mentors are undoubtedly better than others. Here are a few tips to make the search for a great mentor a little easier.

They Should Be Excited

The first characteristic to look for in a mentor is someone who is enthusiastic about the field but also sharing information. You do not want to feel like you have to beg your mentor to help you. A good mentor will make it clear that they are available to help you at any time and be excited to share information with you.

Someone You’re Comfortable With

A good mentor will be someone you feel comfortable with. This means that you can be yourself without fearing judgment. A good mentor understands that you are new to the field and still have a lot to learn! A good mentor will let you know from the beginning that there are no “silly” questions. An open relationship with your mentor is critical to help you learn all that you can!

Someone Who Pushes You

While you want to be comfortable with your mentor, you have to be willing to let them push you. A good mentor will get to know you and know when you can go a bit further. This can be uncomfortable at first but is a critical step in the growth process. You’ll reflect on the experience in the future and be glad that your mentor encouraged you to step out of your comfort zone.

Someone Who Knows How to Listen

It is no secret that some people just aren’t good listeners. A good mentor will not only be a good listener but will also be able to provide feedback based on what they hear. A good mentor will also provide feedback in a way that is constructive but still allows you to grow without breaking your spirit.

Someone Who is An Expert

In order to be a good mentor, the person must have the knowledge to share! This knowledge usually comes from years of experience in the desired field.
